I wasn’t planning on posting on our personal blog about the upcoming election here in Sugar Grove but I figured why not? There are two races here that seem to be getting a lot of attention. (Mostly because they are contested and well, the newspapers like that sort of thing and why wouldn’t they? Controversy is juicy and sells papers!)
I shall talk about the Library Trustee spot first because I’m a candidate and it’s my blog.
I won’t preach here about it but I encourage everyone to visit my campaign web site. (I almost feel a bit like Dvorak here…) I look forwarding to having the opportunity to help guide our library into the future and to work together with the rest of the board and staff.
As far as the Library Referendum goes… COME ON PEOPLE!!! You passed the building bonds why not the operating budget??? You obviously have mandated that the library be supported by building a new facility so why not fund the current one and set things up right for the new one? I really don’t understand this. The fact that Kaneland is once again up for a referendum is a completely separate issue and has no bearing on the Library Referendum. The argument of “well the school needs it more than the library” is absolutely absurd! Libraries build better communities. Fund your library folks! Go check out the Library Friends Referendum Web Site and watch a great video. (Yes I’m biased.)
Since I’ve mentioned Kaneland, yeah, vote for them too. I still think there needs to be better accountability within the district as far as spending goes. It seems at time we’re penny wise and dollar foolish. Nevertheless we need a new middle school, so vote yes! (That goes for the Northsiders too! When you go to the polls today, think to yourself… “What is best for ALL of our kids.”)
And finally there is the Village Trustee Race. Sugar Grove has unlimited potential as far as community growth is concerned. We need strong leadership that will address our local issues and continue to build a better community. In all honesty I have only made up my mind on two candidates: Kevin Geary and Mari Johnson. As incumbents both have a solid history with our village that will help guide them in the future to make sound decisions. In recent months Kevin’s professionalism and personal interests was called into play when a letter to the editor in a local newspaper brought accusations of conflict of interest. Kevin does not hide the fact that he is a commercial real-estate broker in our region. Personally I think its great to see that the people running our village work and live here! Being vested in our community is not a conflict of interest folks, it’s a statement of commitment! Kevin’s professional background of residential and commercial real-estate bring much needed experience to the village board when it comes to decisions that effect our longterm growth. As for our third, we have four other candidates to choose from. Based upon the comments at the Chamber’s Candidate Night, I think our two likely contenders are Joe Wolf and Melissa Taylor. Both have valid concerns and feedback and I would encourage everyone to review the Daily Herald Q&A before going to the polls today.
In closing, best of luck to all candidates! The most important part of Democracy is just showing up! Your willingness to be active in our community shows great courage and determination.
UPDATE: Good grief! How could I forget our neighbor to the south?!?!? For you Yorkville folks, don’t forget our 3rd Ward Advisor! Best of luck Robyn!
So…..how’d the election go? Just wondering ~Christine
Congratulations Ken!
Congratulations Erin!
I’m sure you’ll both do a great job for the Library and your community!
